  4. This article will tell you how to change a normal touch tone
  5. keypad and convert it to a portable unit. In addition, we
  6. give the touch-tone frequencies.
  7.  
  8. First of all, the tones made by a touch tone telephone are not
  9. single tones, they are a combination of two tones, making "DTMF"
  10. (dual tone multi-frequency). The normal tone telephone dials 12
  11. different signals, but is capable of dialing 16 different signals
  12. (see bulletin on silver boxes).
  13.  
  14. The power required by a keypad is about 25 volts, but they will
  15. work with as little as 15, thereby allowing the use of two 9-
  16. volt radio batteries.  As you may have guessed, they are also
  17. designed to operate with a telephone type speaker (and phone
  18. line), and not the standard 8-ohm speaker which needs to be used
  19. for adequate volume.  To accompolish this, we use a matching
  20. transformer, this is one of those miniature ones available at
  21. Radio Shack.  Enough of the theory, now for the circuit.

  23. You will need:

  25. A touch tone keypad
  26. A miniature 1000 to 8 ohm transformer (Radio Shack # 273-1380)
  27. A standard 8-ohm speaker
  28. Two 9-volt radio batteries
  29. Two 9-volt battery clips
  30. A case to put it all in (optional)

  32. A few construction notes, I suggest that you solder and tape all
  33. connections.  It is also important to read this entire bulletin
  34. before attempting to construct this.
  35.  
  36. First, connect the RED wire of the transformer to either
  37. terminal on the speaker.  Now connect the WHITE wire from the
  38. transformer to the other terminal on the speaker.  Next, connect
  39. the RED (positive) wire of one battery clip to the black wire of
  40. the other battery clip.  Now connect the the remaining RED wire
  41. on the second battery clip to the GREEN wire from the touch tone
  42. pad.  Connect the BLUE wire from the touch tone pad to the
  43. ORANGE-and-BLACK striped wire from the touch tone pad.  To these
  44. two wires, now connect the remaining black lead from first
  45. battery clip.  You have now finished the power connection to the
  46. keypad.  Connect the BLACK wire from the keypad to the BLUE wire
  47. on the transformer.  Next connect the RED-and-GREEN striped wire
  48. from the keypad to the GREEN wire on the transformer.  The BLACK
  49. wire on the transformer should not be connected to anything,
  50. along with quite a few wires from the keypad.  The connection of
  51. the keypad is now complete.  All you have to do is connect two
  52. nine volt batteries to the battery clips, and you'll be ready to
  53. go. You may want to mount it in a case for easy portability.
  54. Note that the silver box modification CAN be made to this unit,
  55. allowing complete remote phreaking.  When none of the buttons
  56. are pressed, this unit uses NO power, thereby eliminating the
  57. need for a power switch, and extending the life of the
  58. batteries.

  93.      1) To do this you need two phone
  94. lines with the jacks somewhat near each
  95. other, or at least access to each jack
  96. from a comman place as you will have to
  97. run wires between the two different jacks.

  99.      2) Now open up each jack and take a
  100. look at the inside. (You can open it by
  101. unscrewing the center screw on most modular
  102. jacks.) You will see 4 terminals(Places where
  103. wires meet) There should be one Red, One yellow
  104. One Green, One black. Now what you will do
  105. is take two extra wires(Preferably one Red
  106. and the Other Green from your garage or where
  107. ever you keep that shit). Now take your
  108. red wire and attach one end to the Red
  109. terminal. Do the Same with the green.

  111.       3) Repeat step 2 with the jack for the
  112. other line. So Now you will have a Red and
  113. Greed Free wire for each Line.

  115.       4) Now Get a Single Pole Double Throw Switch
  116. From Radio Shack(Like $.28) Or where ever you can
  117. find one.
  118.       5) Now put the switch in between the
  119. two green wires and the two red wires. Such
  120. that when you turn the switch on the green
  121. wires will be connected and the Red will be too.

  128.        Use: Well Say your two lines are 6666 and 7777.
  129. Who cares about the prefix. Any way I will call them
  130. 6 and 7. Pick up 6 and call somebody. Now call another
  131. person on line 7. Throw the switch. The Person on 7 will
  132. now be able to hear the person on 6 and vice versa. You
  133. can also hang up one of the phones and talk through the
  134. other and both will still hear you. Because of the
  135. way this is set up the person on 6 will hear the peron
  136. on 7 faintly but it isn't that bad. That is true for 7
  137. hearing 6 too. Fool around with id and see what you get.
